How To Measure Your Space
You will need
º Paper
º Pencil
º Tape Measure
º Compass (You could download a free app for this)
º Calculator
º Extra Person (Optional, to hold the end of the tape)
You will find it much easier if you are able to move any furniture aside as it could get in the way and give you inaccurate measurements.
Using a pencil, sketch your existing layout, please remember it is extremely important to include the locations of all windows and doors. As you measure each wall, grab your compass and make a note on your plan which wall faces which direction. Colours can look very different on a south facing to a north facing wall.
1) Use your tape measure to measure each wall, corner to corner, writing down the sizes as your go. (This is where an extra person comes in handy). Include the sizes and locations of any openings and built-ins such as windows, doorways, built-in bookcases or wardrobes, etc).
2) It is important to measure each wall in detail. Start at one corner of the room, measure the distance from the corner of the room to the outside edge of the window casing.
3) Next measure to the opposite edge of the window casing, from there to the edge of a built-in unit, and so on to the opposite corner, keep going until you finish the first wall, then total the measurement, making sure it measures exactly the same as the other wall.
4) Continue this process around the room, making notes of the measurements on your drawing and make a note of dimensions on your sketch of any other built in areas that you wish to keep in your new design. Everything you feel is relevant to include will be beneficial as we will design your new scheme around your measurements and images.
Other measurements that we will need are:
• Ceiling height for each room
• Location of all power outlets
• Height of windows and doors
• Location of windows on each wall
• Location of any wall (sconce) or ceiling lights
To measure the length and width of the room’s main area.
Use the standard (Length) x (Width) = Area formula.[2]
Measure the maximum length and width at the widest
points of the room.[3]
